INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off championship seasons in both the United States Auto Club (USAC) National Sprint Car and Silver Crown Series, Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing has set the bar high in the 2014 USAC campaign with the goal of adding to the 14 championships it’s already earned in the ultra-competitive, open-wheel series.
The team will field entries in the USAC Silver Crown division and USAC Sprint Car Series once again in 2014 with two-time and reigning USAC Silver Crown Series champion Bobby East and two-time defending USAC National Sprint Car Series champion Bryan Clauson.
East will return to the seat of the No. 10 Chevrolet Performance/Curb Records entry looking to become the first driver to win three consecutive Silver Crown titles. East’s 2013 championship marked his third career USAC title, coupled with his Silver Crown title in 2012 and 2004 USAC National Midget Car Series championship.
Clauson begins his second season behind the wheel of the No. 20 Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing entry in the USAC Sprint Car ranks. The Noblesville, Ind., resident will drive the No. 20 Chevrolet Performance/Curb Records/Beast to defend his 2013 Sprint Car championship. In addition to winning two Sprint Car titles (2012, 2013), Clauson is a two-time USAC Midget champion (2010, 2011) and a three-time USAC National Drivers champion (2010, 2011, 2012), where USAC tallies a driver’s best 25 finishes among its top-three touring series – Sprint Car, Midget and Silver Crown – to recognize an overall champion.
East closed his second season for Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing in consistent fashion by earning fast time in the USAC 4-Crown Nationals Silver Crown division in September at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. A solid sixth-place finish enable him to clinch the title. He won once and finished inside the top-five three times in eight starts driving the No. 10 Chevrolet Performance/Curb Records machine. The 29-year-old from Pittsboro, Ind., kicks off his run at three straight titles April 6 in the Sumar Classic at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
“It was a tremendous honor to be able to repeat as the USAC Silver Crown championship last season as part of Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing,” East said. “The support I got from everyone on the team, and especially our partners Chevrolet Performance and Curb Records, was incredible. We had set the bar really high by winning the championship my first year with the team in 2012 and I feel like the hard work and dedication that our team showed last year helped to establish that we were a championship-caliber team. Anytime you can win back-to-back titles, it’s a representation of the strength of your team and I’m looking forward to seeing if we can make it three in a row this year.”
Last year, Clauson returned to Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing and left little doubt that he was the perfect fit for the team. He won his first race in the No. 20 Chevrolet Performance/Curb Records/Beast in February at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla. Posting seven series victories and capturing his first career USAC Indiana Sprint Week title in the process, Clauson went on to win his second consecutive National Sprint Series championship.
Last year was just an amazing year,” Clauson said. “In stepping into the No. 20 car, I knew there would be some high expectations given the history that the car has within the USAC National Sprint Car Series. The team and I meshed really well early on and we really got into a rhythm once we started racing consistently. I’m really proud of everyone at Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing for what we were able to achieve last year and I’m really excited about getting into the groove in 2014. We’re looking to carry the Chevrolet Performance and Curb Records brands through another championship season and to continue to build on our team’s tradition of winning.”
Both drivers will be racing machines backed by Chevrolet Performance and Curb Records, continuing a longstanding relationship between Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing and one of the world’s largest car brands.
The success of Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing in USAC has come with the help of many partners. In 2007, Levi Jones carried the Chevrolet bowtie on his Sprint Car and brought Chevrolet its first USAC championship. Beginning in 2010, Chevrolet Performance and Curb Records have served as co-primary sponsors on the various machines of Clauson, East and Jones. This season, the Chevrolet Performance brand will again be a co-primary sponsor on Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing’s USAC Sprint Car and Silver Crown entries.
“Chevrolet is proud of the partnership with Tony Stewart Racing,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet’s U.S. Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “The partnership with Tony’s team provides a direct link to passionate short-track fans who have a tremendous appreciation for performance and expose them to Chevrolet’s performance vehicles, high performance parts and accessories.”
The team continues its partnership with renowned car owners Mike Curb and Cary Agajanian. For the past four seasons, Tony Stewart Racing has been joined by Curb-Agajanian Racing in its USAC Silver Crown effort. In 2012, that relationship expanded to include both the Silver Crown and Sprint Car entries. In 2014, the team again carries the historic Curb-Agajanian name as a co-entrant with its storied USAC program.
“We are proud to continue our relationship with Tony Stewart Racing, where we have shared four consecutive USAC Silver Crown National Championships with drivers Levi Jones and Bobby East,” said Curb, Chairman of Curb Records. “We are also excited to defend our USAC Sprint Car Championships with our longtime friend Bryan Clauson. We are also proud to be involved with Donny Schatz and Steve Kinser in the World of Outlaws Series and, most of all, to be partnered with Tony Stewart.”
“Our goal when we formed Tony Stewart Racing was to create a grassroots motorsports program that would compete for wins and championships while promoting qualified drivers to the next level, as well as providing them with an opportunity to leave their mark on the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series and among the USAC National Series,” said Stewart, who captured four USAC national championships early in his career, including the elusive Triple Crown in 1995, when he earned titles in each of USAC’s top divisions. “We’ve been successful but, in order to remain successful, we needed partners committed to us and committed to motorsports. We’ve found the perfect partners in Chevrolet Performance and Curb Records.
“I’m really proud to work with Mike Curb and Cary Agajanian again this season, not only as co-entrants with our USAC program, but as a sponsor on our World of Outlaws program. They both have such a storied and diverse history in the sport. It’s an honor to work with them.”
Kicking off the season in Florida has become commonplace for many forms of motorsports. Florida Speedweeks brings the best in the business to the Sunshine State and Clauson wasted little time in opening defense of his USAC Sprint Car title, picking up a win on the second night of competition Feb. 22 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla. The series returns to action on Saturday at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway.
