Tony Stewart Racing: World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Port Royal Advance

Oct. 24, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS – For the third consecutive week, Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) driver Donny Schatz returns to a track as the most recent winner at the facility. This week’s stop is Port Royal (Pennsylvania) Speedway and Schatz, who will drive the TSR No. 15 STP/Armor All/Crimsafe J&J, won the World of Outlaws (WoO) STP Sprint Car Series most recent visit to the half-mile, dirt oval in the fall of 2004. Each of the last two weekends, Schatz continued winning streaks at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, New York and Fremont (Ohio) Speedway to give him a career-best 26 WoO A-Feature triumphs in 2014.

TSR’s Steve Kinser has only three more races in his final full season of action with “The Greatest Show on Dirt” and he’s looking to close out the WoO “Salute to the King Tour” the way he opened the campaign. Kinser wheeled the TSR No. 11 Bad Boy Buggies/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Performance Maxim to victory in the third A-Feature of the season.

Several things have changed since the Outlaws last appeared at “The Port.” Kinser was in the midst of winning his 19th WoO championship and Schatz was still seeking his first. Schatz has all but clinched his sixth WoO championship heading into Saturday’s event. The Fargo, North Dakota racer has a 313-point advantage over Daryn Pittman and continues to increase his lead each week. Last weekend at Fremont, he became the first driver this season to transfer through the Last Chance Showdown and win the A-Feature. Schatz started 11th in the 40-lap race and took the lead with seven laps remaining. The victory was his sixth in the last nine WoO events.

Pennsylvania has been fertile soil for both TSR drivers throughout their historic careers. Kinser has won 65 of his 577 career WoO A-Feature triumphs in the Keystone State. The Bloomington, Indiana native would like to make Port Royal the 143rd facility where he’s been victorious.  Schatz has earned 22 of his 172 career WoO A-Feature wins in Pennsylvania. His victory at Port Royal in September 2004 was the 25th of his career and he followed that two nights later with his third National Open victory at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

The teammates have completed 86 nights of racing to date in the 2014 WoO STP Sprint Car Series campaign and their positions in the final standings are nearly secure. By showing up to each of the final three races, Schatz will earn the championship. He and his STP team are hoping to continue adding to their incredible totals highlighted by their 26 wins, 61 top-fives and 78 top-10s. Kinser ranks eighth overall.

For Saturday’s race at Port Royal Speedway, the gates will open at 3 p.m. EDT. Racing is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. More details are available by visiting www.portroyalspeedway.com .

Race fans unable to attend this weekend’s events can catch all of the action on DIRTVision.com. Fans can listen live as Johnny Gibson, “Voice of the Outlaws,” calls the action as he does at all WoO STP Sprint Car Series events on the DIRTVision.com cybercast, as well as on the DIRT Radio Network. Steve Kinser, Driver of the No. 11 TSR/Bad Boy Buggies/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Performance Maxim:

It’s been a decade since you raced at Port Royal Speedway. What are your expectations for the weekend?

“Our thoughts are to go out there and do everything we can to have a chance at winning. It’s just like what we try to do every other night. The only difference is that it’s a place where we haven’t been for quite a while. We’ve had some things get better for us recently, like qualifying and being able to race in the heat, but the feature is when we’ve been struggling. The Bad Boy Buggies guys (Scott Gerkin, Gary DuBois, and Mark Angerett Jr.) have done a great job all season. We’ve had our moments and I know we’d all like a night where we’re strong from start to finish. Any time you go to Pennsylvania, there is going to be strong competition. We look forward to that and are excited to see what we can do on Saturday.”

Donny Schatz, Driver of the No. 15 TSR/STP/Armor All/Crimsafe J&J:

The beat keeps going for you and the STP team. How much does it help you and your team each week knowing that you are capable of winning every time you show up at the track?

“It’s a mindset that we’ve strived for. We know after each race that we just have to forget about it and move on to the next one. It takes hard work and I have to give all the people involved with this STP team a lot of credit. The crew (Rick Warner, Steve Swenson, and Eric Prutzman) won’t be satisfied with anything but wins and sometimes we can win and feel like there are things we can do better. It’s always been about winning races. It’s been such a privilege to drive this car all season. Coming off an incredible year in 2013, we knew we had to keep digging to get where we wanted. I know every week I’m really excited to get to the track. Those guys are the same way. We are having so much fun right now. This week’s challenge is going to a place where we haven’t been in quite a while and see if we can keep it going. The season is almost over and, with the way things have been going, I wish we had 20 more races. Unfortunately, we only have three, so we’ll have to do our best in each one of those and see what we can accomplish.”
